How much grout do I need per square foot?
It depends mostly on tile size, joint width and thickness. A 12 × 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints and 5/16 in thickness needs roughly 0.06–0.08 kg per square foot, while a 1 × 1 in mosaic with the same joints can triple that. The calculator prints the exact per-m² figure for your inputs.
What is the standard grout formula?
Coverage (kg/m²) = (A + B) ÷ (A × B) × C × D × 1.6, where A and B are tile side lengths, C the joint width and D the tile thickness — all in millimeters. It estimates the joint volume around each tile and converts it with a density factor, and it is the same math most manufacturers publish.
How wide should grout joints be?
Rectified (machine-cut) tiles can take tight 1/16–1/8 in joints; pressed tiles usually need 3/16–1/4 in to hide size variation. Wider joints tolerate movement better but consume far more grout — the per-m² figure in this calculator shows exactly what a wider spacer costs you.
How much extra grout should I buy?
Add 10 percent for straightforward jobs and up to 25 percent for mosaics, uneven substrates or first-timers — cleanup loss is real. Buying from the same dye lot matters more for color than for coverage, so get it all at once.
Does tile thickness really change grout use?
Yes, almost linearly: the grout fills the joint to the full tile thickness, so doubling thickness roughly doubles consumption at the same joint width. That is why this calculator asks for it — most wrong grout estimates trace back to guessing thickness.
