What size AC do I need for a 300 sq ft room?
The baseline is 300 × 20 = 6,000 BTU/h; with an average 8-foot ceiling, average insulation and normal sun you land around 6,000–7,000 BTU/h, so an 8,000 BTU unit gives comfortable margin. A sunny kitchen of the same size needs roughly 4,000 BTU/h more.
How many BTU per square foot is right?
About 20 BTU/h per sq ft is the standard cooling starting point for a temperate US room. Multiply up for poor insulation, high ceilings, sunny exposure and extra occupants — that is exactly what the controls on this page do for you.
How much does a mini-split cost installed?
A single-zone ductless mini-split typically runs $2,500–$6,000 installed in the US, depending on BTU class and line-set length. A window AC is far cheaper: roughly $150–$600. Multi-zone systems climb past $8,000 — get three quotes before committing.
What is a 'ton' of cooling?
One ton equals 12,000 BTU/h — a leftover from the ice-era of cooling. A 24,000 BTU/h mini-split is a '2-ton' unit. The calculator prints tons next to BTU/h so you can read any spec sheet or contractor quote.
Is a bigger AC better?
No — an oversized AC short-cycles: it cools the air fast, shuts off, and never dehumidifies, leaving the room cold-but-clammy while wearing out the compressor. Size to the number, round up to the nearest available unit, and stop there.
