What are the NEC conduit fill limits?
NEC Chapter 9, Table 1: one conductor fills to 53 percent, two conductors to 31 percent, and three or more to 40 percent of the conduit's total internal area. Short nipple runs (24 inches or less) are allowed 60 percent because pulling friction barely matters there.
How many 12 AWG wires fit in 1/2 inch EMT?
Using the approximate areas here, 1/2-inch EMT offers about 0.304 in² of bore and 12 AWG THHN takes about 0.0181 in², so 40 percent fill allows six conductors. Real-world charts land at 5–9 depending on insulation type — the wire's actual Table 5 area is what counts.
Does conduit fill affect wire ampacity?
Fill and ampacity are separate checks. Passing fill does not save you from derating: more than three current-carrying conductors bundled together require ampacity adjustment factors under NEC 310.15, and hot attics stack another temperature correction on top.
Which conduit type fits the most wire?
At the same trade size, PVC Schedule 40 and EMT carry slightly more area than RMC, and PVC Schedule 80 carries noticeably less than Sch 40 because of its thicker wall. If a size fails, stepping up one trade size almost always fixes it.
Can I trust this instead of the NEC tables?
No — treat it as a fast planning estimate. The internal areas and wire areas here are close approximations, but the NEC Chapter 9 Tables 4, 5 and 5A are the authority your inspector will use, and special insulations like XHHW-2 change the wire area.
