About this tool

Calories from walking scale with distance and body mass: distance = steps × stride length (estimated from height as ~0.415×height for women, 0.415×height for men average 0.413), then energy ≈ 0.5 kcal per kg per km at a moderate pace, adjusted upward for brisk pace using standard MET values (2.8 stroll, 3.5 moderate, 4.3 brisk, 5.0 very brisk). This is the same method fitness researchers use for population estimates — accurate enough for planning, not for clinical use.

FAQ

How accurate is step-to-calorie math?
Within ~10–15% for level walking — the same MET method used in published compendia of physical activity. Hills, wind and individual gait shift real numbers.
What stride length is used?
Estimated as ≈ 0.413 × height, the population average; if you know your measured stride, the tool lets you override it.
Does this count running?
This tool is walking-focused; running burns roughly 2× per km — use our calories-burned tool for running METs.
