A1C to Average Glucose (eAG) Calculator

Convert A1C % to eAG in mg/dL or mmol/L and back, with ADA context bands.

Quick answer: Convert A1C to estimated average glucose in mg/dL or mmol/L and back, with ADA context bands explained in plain English. Free, instant, and private.

How to use

  1. Choose forward (A1C → eAG) or reverse (eAG → A1C).
  2. Type your value — A1C in percent, or eAG in mg/dL or mmol/L.
  3. Press Convert and read both units plus the band chip.
  4. Compare the colored ADA bands against your own lab report.

About this tool

The A1C test and average glucose are two views of the same three months: this converter applies the ADAG study equation (estimated average glucose = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7 mg/dL) forward from A1C to eAG in mg/dL or mmol/L, and backward from a meter or lab average back to an equivalent A1C. Color-coded chips place the result against the ADA reference bands — below 5.7 percent, 5.7 to 6.4, and 6.5 and above — so you can see where a number sits at a glance. This is an educational estimate — not medical advice. Individual red-cell turnover, anemia, pregnancy, and lab method differences can shift real results in either direction, and a formal diagnosis belongs to a clinician with laboratory tests.

FAQ

Which equation converts A1C to average glucose?
The ADAG study linear model: eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7, and mmol/L = eAG ÷ 18.052. At an A1C of 6.5 percent that works out to roughly 140 mg/dL, or 7.8 mmol/L.
Is the result a diagnosis?
No. It is a screening-context estimate only. Diagnosis depends on laboratory A1C, fasting glucose, or OGTT testing interpreted by a clinician — lab tests are always authoritative over any conversion.
Why does my meter average disagree with this?
Meter averages skip skipped readings, and red-cell turnover, anemia, kidney disease, pregnancy, and hemoglobin variants can pull a real A1C up or down relative to your true average glucose.
What are the ADA bands again?
Below 5.7 percent is the normal reference, 5.7–6.4 percent is the prediabetes band, and 6.5 percent and above is the diabetes range — all confirmed with laboratory methods, not home estimates.
Does this store anything?
No. The conversion runs entirely in the page — nothing is saved, logged, or sent anywhere.
