Blood Type Compatibility Calculator and Chart

Red-cell donor grids, parent-to-child possibilities, and plasma rules in one place.

Quick answer: Pick any ABO and Rh type to see compatible red-cell donors, explore parent-to-child type possibilities, and read the plasma rules. A clear reference chart.

Parents → possible child types (ABO genetics)

Plasma runs the opposite way: type AB plasma can be given to any group (universal plasma donor) and type O recipients can receive plasma from anyone — while O- is the universal red-cell donor and AB+ the universal red-cell recipient. Transfusions are decided by clinicians using antibody screens and crossmatching, not by charts. Educational estimate — not medical advice.

How to use

  1. Pick a recipient type and press Show compatible donors to light up the red-cell grid.
  2. Scroll the result for the universal-donor or universal-recipient note.
  3. Pick two parent types and press Show child possibilities for the ABO genetics table.
  4. Read the plasma note and the clinician disclaimer at the bottom.

About this tool

Blood type compatibility is a fixed reference table, so this page embeds the whole red-cell grid: pick any ABO and Rh recipient type and the compatible donor types light up — from O−, the universal red-cell donor, to AB+, the universal recipient. A second calculator applies standard ABO Mendelian genetics to two parent types and lists the ABO types their child could have, with a plain-language note on how the Rh gene behaves. Plasma is included as a note because it runs the opposite way: AB plasma is the universal plasma donor, and type O recipients can receive plasma from any group. Real transfusion decisions are made by clinicians using antibody screens and crossmatching, because rare subgroups and antibodies exist beyond this chart. It is an educational estimate — not medical advice.

FAQ

Why is O− the universal red-cell donor?
O red cells carry neither A nor B antigens, and Rh− means no D antigen either — so there is nothing for the common recipient antibodies to attack.
Why can AB+ receive from everyone?
AB plasma contains no anti-A or anti-B antibodies, and the D antigen is already present, so none of the eight donor types triggers a red-cell reaction.
How does plasma compatibility differ?
It runs the opposite way: AB plasma is the universal plasma donor and type O recipients can take plasma from any group. Red-cell rules must never be applied to plasma or the other way round.
Can two O+ parents have an O− child?
Yes — if both carry one recessive Rh− gene. That is why a child Rh can differ from both parents in the ABO-and-Rh table.
What are the limits of this chart?
It covers the eight common ABO/Rh types only — rare subgroups, antibodies, and special cases exist that no table captures. Hospitals crossmatch the actual units before every transfusion, so treat this as an educational reference, not medical advice.
