About this tool

This page turns your microphone into an approximate sound-level meter: it captures live audio, computes the RMS of the waveform and converts it to a decibel reading with an animated bar, plus running minimum, average and maximum for your session. Honesty first: your phone or laptop mic is not a calibrated Class-2 meter — expect ±10 dB or more of error, so treat the number as comparative (louder versus quieter, before versus after) rather than absolute. The reference table applies the NIOSH exchange rule — every 3 dB increase halves the safe exposure time, from 8 hours at 85 dBA down to 15 minutes at 100 dBA. Audio is analyzed in memory only: nothing is recorded, stored or transmitted. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded and the data is dropped from memory when you close the tab.
