Keyboard Tester — Check Every Key, Code & Ghosting

On-screen QWERTY lights up on keydown; the log shows key, code and keyCode; a counter exposes ghosting.

Quick answer: Press keys on your physical keyboard and watch them light up on screen, read key, code and keyCode in a live log, and expose ghosting with a counter.

Best experienced with a physical keyboard — click this page once, then start pressing keys.

Held now: 0 · Max simultaneous: 0

How to use

  1. Click once anywhere on the page so it receives keyboard focus.
  2. Press keys and watch the on-screen layout light up per keydown.
  3. Hold two to four keys together and read the simultaneous counter for ghosting.
  4. Review the log (key · code · keyCode) and press Clear between rounds.

About this tool

A keyboard with a chattered key or a membrane board that drops simultaneous presses shows its faults only under real typing. This tester recreates a full QWERTY layout on screen and lights up every key the instant your browser receives its keydown event, using the hardware-level event.code so physical keys are identified correctly regardless of your operating-system layout. Below the keyboard, a running log records each press with its key name, code and legacy keyCode, while a simultaneous-key counter tracks the maximum number of keys held at once — the quick way to expose ghosting and n-key rollover limits. Best used with a physical keyboard; tapping the on-screen keys works but tests nothing but the touch layer.

FAQ

What does event.code mean?
It identifies the physical key (KeyA, Digit1) independent of your OS layout, which is why tester tools report it instead of the printed letter.
What is ghosting?
When a keyboard cannot register certain combinations at once, some pressed keys simply never reach the computer. The simultaneous counter exposes exactly that.
Why does my keyboard drop keys after six?
Many USB keyboards send at most 6 keys per report; holding seven or more may drop inputs. Gaming boards with NKRO avoid the limit.
Does it work on touch screens?
Partially — the on-screen keys highlight when tapped, but the test is designed for physical keyboards and real key events.
Are my keystrokes recorded anywhere?
No — the log is plain text inside your tab and vanishes when you leave; nothing is stored or sent to any server.
