About this tool

This is a straight-talking dictionary front end for the free Free Dictionary API. Type a word and you get its phonetic transcription, a playable audio pronunciation, meanings split by part of speech, real usage examples, and tappable synonym chips that run a new lookup when clicked. Your last ten lookups are kept in your browser's localStorage so you can hop back through a reading session with one click — and only in your browser; clear them any time with the Clear history button. When a word isn't in the dictionary you get an honest not-found message instead of made-up results. Students, editors, ESL readers, and crossword fans get a fast, ad-free lookup that remembers where they left off. Lookups are sent to the dictionary API (it has to be, to fetch the entry) — everything else, including your history, stays on this page.
