About this tool

The Hijri calendar is lunar: 12 months of 29–30 days, about 354 days a year. This converter uses the standard tabular (civil) conversion used by most date libraries, computing through the Julian day number so both directions stay consistent. Because real-world Hijri dates are confirmed by moon sighting, printed calendars can differ by ±1 day — the tool states this honestly rather than pretending to false precision.

FAQ

Why can the result differ by a day from my calendar?
Official Hijri dates follow actual moon sighting; the tabular calendar is a fixed arithmetic approximation. A ±1 day difference is normal and expected.
Which years are supported?
Any reasonable year in both calendars — the conversion is mathematical, not a lookup table.
Is anything stored?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.

How the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar Works

The Hijri calendar is lunar: twelve months that begin at the observed crescent of each new moon, so the year runs about 354–355 days — roughly 10–11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. That is why Islamic dates drift earlier each Gregorian year, and why Ramadan or Eid arrives in a different season each decade. The months, in order: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah and Dhu al-Hijjah. Four of them (Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram, Rajab) are sacred months in which fighting was traditionally forbidden.

Conversion between the systems is pure arithmetic once a month-start convention is fixed — which is exactly where differences arise. This converter uses the widely deployed tabular (arithmetic) Hijri calendar, so results are instant and consistent, and may differ by ±1 day from local moon-sighting declarations.

Why Your Hijri Date May Differ by a Day

Two communities can legitimately celebrate Eid a day apart because month starts depend on physical moon sighting, and sighting depends on location, weather and horizon conditions. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar is computed astronomically and anchors official administrative dates; South Asian and many African communities wait for verified local crescent sighting; some organisations accept sighting anywhere in the country, others require local sighting. None of these is "wrong" — they are different conventions applied to the same sky.

  • For prayer timetables and school holidays, follow the announced local dates.
  • For historical or genealogical dates, tabular conversion is the standard method.
  • When a converted date matters legally (contracts, ID documents), the issuing authority's calendar governs.
  • Expect ±1 day differences near month boundaries; mid-month dates convert unambiguously.
